The fire at Simon Metals scrap yard this morning sent up acrid black plumes of toxic smoke, resulting in health advisories from Tacoma Fire & State Ecology and an order from the Port of Tacoma to shut down all terminal operations until air quality improves. But did you hear a word on the news or from regulatory agencies about the health of the 1,500+ migrants & refugees locked literally yards away from the fire in the for-profit NW Detention Center?\n\nNWDC is built next to a former coal waste dump, now a Superfund Site known as the Tacoma Tar Pits. That’s the brown hill that separates it from Simon Metals. NWDC had to obtain a special zoning exemption from the city & port to warehouse humans in the industrial Tideflats, in a seismic zone vulnerable to soil liquefaction and tsunamis. \n\nEnough is enough! It’s time to clean house in Tacoma. No more toxic pollution, no more fossil fuels, no more treaty violations, no more human detention, no more prison profiteers, no more corporatist compromised politicians who allow these injustices to continue.\n\n#TacCouncil #toxicprison #NWDC #port253 #Not1More #AbolishICE #environmentaljustice #ClimateJustice #RiseForClimate #southsoundproud #TacomaAroma #FossilFree #StandWithPuyallupTribe #NOLNG253", "icon"=>nil, "type"=>"photo"}}
