A message from Jeffrey Smith, author of "Genetic Roulette" and Executive Director of the Institute For Responsible Technology:
I am reaching out to you to join with me in an urgent campaign to raise public awareness about GMOs in the People's Republic of China. Today, we launch a new project that has the potential to impact the lives of billions of people around the globe.
China accounts for about 20% of all U.S. agricultural exports and its position on GMOs has huge ramifications. When Syngenta, for example, introduced two new corn varieties in the US that were not yet approved in China, all US corn shipments were rejected by China for many months. Nearly 1800 farmers are suing Syngenta for industry losses of over $1 billion. On September 26, 2014, Reuters reported that China's Ministry of Agriculture delayed the approval of a new genetically modified soybean variety citing "low public acceptance." According to the report, "It is the first time that China's Ministry of Agriculture has cited public opinion as a reason for delaying approval of a GMO crop." There are several new GMOs in the US pipeline, including apples, potatoes, corn, and soy varieties whose commercialization in the US may ultimately be decided by "public opinion" in China. At the same time, the current Roundup Ready and Bt producing GMOs are rapidly losing popularity due to the emergence of resistant weeds and bugs nationwide.
Our campaign is designed to tell Chinese citizens the truth about GMOs; it is is absolutely critical and timely. It will also urge Chinese leaders to take the lead in banning the production, sales, use and export of glyphosate (Roundup), to stop importing GM crop products, and stop approving new ones.
The campaign begins today with the immediate release and widespread distribution of the of the Chinese language dubbed version of Genetic Roulette---The Gamble of our Lives.
According to John Robbins, author of nine bestsellers that have collectively sold more than 3 million copies, "Genetic Roulette has done more than any other film or book to create a worldwide movement to ban GMOs. Making the film available, to the more than one billion people worldwide who speak Chinese as a first language, has the potential to accelerate a tipping point for the elimination of GMOs from the world's food supply."
Now is the time to act. We have learned that Dow AgroSciences has delayed the launch of their new 2,4-D resistant seeds---dubbed "agent orange" seeds---pending approval of an import license from China! If we act now, we can quickly share what we have learned with the people of China, whose collective opinion may ultimately protect all of us from serious harm.
We need your help, now. There is no life or livelihood anywhere on the planet that will remain unaffected if multinational corporations such as Monsanto, DuPont, Syngenta, and Dow AgroSciences are allowed to co-opt global food security and food safety. Please donate today to IRT's campaign to raise $150,000 to make this life-changing documentary available to millions of people.
Please give generously. Please share this message. Decisions about food security and food safety rightfully belong to the people, not corporations. It is our hope that by working together, we can make the critical difference for China, for ourselves, and for future generations. To donate, click here. Thank you for your support.
Safe Eating,
Jeffrey Smith
Executive Director
P.S. International demand for full disclosure about the health risks of GMOs continues to build. The historic Food Safety & Sustainable Agriculture Forum was convened in Beijing in July 2014 and brought together more than 30 experts on the health and environmental dangers of genetically modified foods and crops. The conference sparked worldwide concern about GMOs and you can watch the informative conference summary presentation by IRT Executive Director, Jeffrey Smith by clicking here.
