Unmanaged Facebook Post
Bill Moyer said, "This was an interesting moment for me. I felt the need to speak with the officer in charge and have him send a message to the commander who we had met with a couple times in the past couple months.
The Coast Guard constantly tout Safety as their mantra; express indifference to the issues or politics, but their behavior betrays a blind or unconscious obedience to corporate masters, despite those corporations' criminal record. They actively endangered the kayakers on the water rather than honor the legitimate concerns of the Kayaktivists. Instead of allowing the untieing of lines and the expansion of the "safety zone," they could have ceded even a small victory by delaying either departure.
Instead, on June 15 and today, June 30, 2015, the Coast Guard along with other law enforcement (for whom my expectations are yet lower) exhibited a firm commitment to swiftly escorting Royal Dutch Shell past the pesky protestors to commit their greedy, ecocidal, climate cooking crimes.
But who do these people serve? Why should they care whether Shell leaves on schedule or not?
If they truly serve the people of this country - including the Kayaktivists who are acting responsibly, safely with principled, nonviolent actions in defense of our shared future - How would it harm the Coast Guard to honor the Kayaktivists' legitimate grievances and brave action?
The Coast Guard should never have allowed either the Polar Pioneer or the igNoble Discoverer to leave their moorings when there were Kayaktivists in the water. The Coast Guard should have in the past AND should in the future honor the work of the Kayaktivists with a respectful delay of Shell's voyage." - Bill Moyer
