On this week's organizing call we'll discuss the latest developments on the Solutionary Rail campaign and hear from our featured guests, environmental justice advocates Leticia DeCaigny and Eric Kirkendall of Kansas City, KS. Kansas City is the second-largest rail hub and third-largest trucking hub in the country as described in this excellent video.  (see Eric and Leticia's bios and organizational links below the video.)

Guest Bios:

Eric Kirkendall is an IT and business consultant, and retired Federal employee. He worked for the University of Kansas, Sprint, NASA, and USDA as a project and program manager, strategic and business planner, and IT manager. He has Master's degrees in Urban Planning and Public Administration and a Bachelors degree in Geography.  Eric has been active in community organizing and environmental advocacy since the 1990s, and was instrumental in defeating two large development projects in the Kansas City area that would have had significant negative environmental and health impacts.  Eric is consultant to the national Moving Forward Network, dedicated to freight transportation environmental health issues, and co-founder, with Richard Mabion, of the Diesel Health Project. He is a founder of CleanAirNow, a Kansas City area regional clean air coalition. He is also the co-founder and director of Lawrence Creates Inc. and the Lawrence Creates Makerspace in Lawrence, Kansas. 

 

Leticia DeCaigny was born and raised in Kansas City, KS. She has a Bachelors degree in Business Management and owns her own business inspiring healthy living around the world. She found her passion and purpose when an unfortunate situation struck her family. She lives a life dedicated to advocate for healthy lifestyles to prevent disease, reduce illness, improve quality of life and for cleaner environments. She has worked with organizations such as the Diesel Health Project and groups to confront diesel air pollution in their community as it is located next to the 2nd largest rail yard in the U.S. and raise awareness of the current environmental issues in KCK. She has introduced her high school with a way to grow their own food with an aeroponic growing system as an eco friendly way to produce all year round.
